When I was a little girl my mother told me I could be anything I wanted to be. I dropped out of college to be a performer but never made it, but the college loan balooned from $17,000 to $50,000+ and has kept me working as a secretary my whole life.
I had a brain hemorage at 29 and even after that the student loan kept snowballing and cannot be written off in bankruptcy. Why do they let you discharge consumer debt but not student loan debt? To keep the capitalist machine going? If consumers can discharge their debt, they can apply for new loans for more debt?
I also owe $50,000 on 2006 taxes. I have no family, I have very few friends and I spend most of my money on animal rescue. I feel fury and rage for the injustice committed toward animals every moment and worry that this movement is forgetting about them. my home page is humanerevolution.org
When you are homeless there are no provisions for keeping your animals.

Eeek, this is kind of the first one I’m iffy about. It’s nice your mom told you that you could be anything you wanted to, but I’m guessing you were an adult when you decided to be a “performer” and probably knew the odds of making a living from it were quite slim.
I do think it’s messed up student loan debt isn’t discharged and I feel bad for the fate of her animals. I’m guessing they’ll have the unfortunate fate of being sheltered if no one adopts them, and there aren’t too many no-kill shelters around.
But…while it really is too bad she loathes her secretarial job, in this case she’s luckier than most because she got that job and didn’t even finish college. I know people with MBA’s that can’t even get jobs as administrative assistants in this climate.
